Ponting began his architectural career in 1864 in the office of the architect Samuel Overton. He was agent for Meux brewing family's estate from 1870 until 1888. After Admiral

Ponting married Overton's daughter Martha Margaretta in 1872. She died in 1873 at the age of 20 while giving birth to their twin daughters
